Annual Gala

A Night for Heroes

Celebrating world-class
trauma care.

When members of the world’s premier trauma care family join forces, amazing things happen. This gala evening showcased both the global leadership of the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center and the more intimate details relating to the scores of trauma care professionals needed to save one precious life. Through examples large and small, the evening’s theme said it all. Better. Together.

Educe partnered with the University of Maryland Medical System Foundation to create an experience that celebrated the team work and the individuals involved in the resounding success of the Shock Trauma Center. Set against the dramatic backdrop of a 125’ screen and with emergency lights flashing and surround sound engulfing, the program opening launched an immersive multi-media experience that took guests from the scene of a traffic accident through the dramatic helicopter rescue to treatment at Shock Trauma. The program itself included a heart-felt tribute song performed by one of Shock Trauma’s own nurses, as well as examples of the center’s reach across the state of Maryland and its global role as a leader in research and trauma care.

Shock Trauma nurses were front and center this evening. They shared excerpts from letters of gratitude written by patients and their families – each illustrating the personal and personalized nursing care available to all.

In a tribute to the pink scrubs worn by Shock Trauma team members, as the words of the Nightingale Prayer were read, “let us take up our own ‘lanterns of caring,’ each in our own ways,” the room was bathed in a rosy glow and images of pink lanterns set aloft floated across the plasma stage backdrop. All nurses were asked to stand and raise their arms high, adorned with LED bracelets that also glowed pink.

The evening’s finale was the telling of one patient’s story – his tragic accident and the many, many emergency and trauma professionals who saved his life. The heroes were brought to stage as their names were read, culminating in the patient joining his care team and bringing guests to their feet. A local community choir topped the program with a performance of “One Voice,” a song that captured the power and beauty of individuals joining together. The celebration continued with dancing and a dessert reception – time off well-deserved.
