Rising to the Challenge
Setting the stage for a dramatic announcement with world-class talent and iconic venue.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Temple of Dendur provided a dramatic setting for an equally dramatic announcement: the extension of Johns Hopkins University’s Rising to the Challenge campaign goal to $5 billion, making it the largest in the institution’s 140-year history. Johns Hopkins himself made an appearance and treated the capacity crowd to a “Hamilton-esque” rap performance enumerating the many accomplishments of the university. Alumnus and philanthropist Michael Bloomberg joined fellow alumnus and Met President Daniel Weiss in acknowledging the school’s impact on their lives. The evening closed with a performance by mezzo-soprano and Peabody faculty member, Denyce Graves.

The evening’s goal was to offer an update on how the campaign’s progress has generated change and growth at Johns Hopkins, announce the campaign’s extension, and communicate its promise. To build excitement around this new opportunity, programming needed to arouse pride in the university, strengthen the desire to be connected to it, and inspire action to ensure its future—while acknowledging the pivotal role donors have played in the campaign’s success and celebrate the importance of being part of a close community of supporters and the impact of giving.
All of this was brought to life through spoken remarks underscored by profile videos showcasing the impact of the campaign thus far. Baltimore and Manhattan happily merged on Museum Row by bringing both Broadway and Johns Hopkins talent to the performance stage. Donors were recognized and thanked by their peers and the institution in ways that were memorable and aspirational. Announcements of the increased campaign goal and length were met with pride, enthusiasm, and an extended round of applause. Guests left humming the chorus from the song custom-created specifically for the evening.
