Grit & Greatness
A launch for a campaign that, like the public university it supports, is different by design.
Grit & Greatness: The Campaign for UMBC is different by design, building on the momentum achieved during the school’s 50th Anniversary year and focusing on the commitment and vision of its greater community of alumni, faculty, and staff. In keeping with this, the campaign launch event needed to showcase the impact of contributions at all levels while acknowledging the lead donors who first believed in the institution. Finding themselves in a very familiar and utilitarian space transformed for the evening, guests learned first-hand what is possible when the community comes together. Music to their ears!
“The Educe team has been an extraordinary part of our successes. The creativity, the patience, the professionalism — through the 50th and last night — have been best in class. You worked with us in a way that allowed the uniqueness of our stories and our voice to shine through.”
Greg Simmons, Vice President, Institutional Advancement, UMBC
Coming out of the university’s 50th Anniversary year, the campaign launch needed to communicate the exciting opportunities for UMBC’s future and the campaign’s role in making them reality. The event had to honor donors across the spectrum in an appropriate way that illustrates how and why all gifts matter while acknowledging the generosity and importance of leadership donors. The goal was to leave guests with a renewed sense of pride in the university and its achievements and to build a sense of community and create a feeling of solidarity across diverse constituents.
A student performance of “Somewhere” from West Side Story helped set the tone of inclusive excellence prevalent at UMBC throughout its history. The program was developed specifically to highlight and celebrate the impact of donor contributions at all levels. Multi-media was used to bring particular giving stories to life in ways that added excitement and emphasis without lengthening the evening. The musical finale featured members of the UMBC Symphony Orchestra, a world-renowned master conductor, and the entire audience—literally playing their part in the campaign’s success. Guests mixed and mingled with UMBC faculty and students at the forefront of their fields during the interactive dinner reception that followed.
